FAQs (Frequently asked questions)

Q: Why was the name "QUOIN" chosen?
A: "QUOIN" symbolizes the unity of two long-standing, successful organizations, the Dallas and Fort Worth Chapters. It also symbolizes the coming together of general and specialty contractors for strength, unity, and effective leadership of all contractors, which is the force that will help us "build the best contractor community in the world."

Q: How is QUOIN's membership structured?
A: There are three membership categories:
Contractor Members are General Contractors and Specialty Contractors who provide labor.
Subscriber Members are Specialty Contractors who do not choose the Contractor Category and are only interested in the weekly CMD Bulletin and QUOIN's publications, cellular phone plan, worker's compensation program and group insurance.
Industry Members are service professionals and suppliers (i.e. Insurance agencies, Attorneys, etc.) who continue to have networking and training opportunities, who are not eligible for Contractor membership.

Q: What is QUOIN's vision?
A: QUOIN's vision is to "...build the best contractor community in the world."

Q: What is the association's new name and what does it mean?
A: The new name is QUOIN (pronounced "coin"); it is not an acronym, it is an actual construction term defined in Webster's Dictionary as "a solid exterior angle, a cornerstone or keystone of an arch that brings two walls together."

Q: How is the Board of Directors structured in the new organization?
A: QUOIN's Board of Directors consists of 24 Directors:
12 from Dallas and East Texas
12 from Fort Worth
20 General Contractors
4 Specialty Contractors
QUOIN's goal for the future is to have the Board proportionally represent its contractor membership base.

Q: What is the new association staff structure?
A: QUOIN's staff included:
1 President/CEO
1 Executive Vice President of Member Services
1 Executive Vice President of Operations
2 Directors of Safety, Health and Environmental Services
1 Director of Governmental Affairs
5 Support Staff
1 Receptionist
1 East Texas Regional Director

Q: Why should Specialty Contractors choose to be a Contractor Member and pay more dues?
A: Services available exclusively to Contractor Members

  • Safety inspections
  • OSHA representation (reduction in one fine could possibly pay your dues for at least one year)
  • Develop and oversight of safety programs
  • Maximize growth and development of our member firms and their employees (i.e. Professional Development Classes, Forums, Management and Safety Training)
  • Representation with public entities (i.e. relationships with building, plumbing electrical and fire inspectors)
  • Full time representatives lobbying at the local, state and national levels, to continue to enhance the construction community.
  • Strengthen and unifying general contractors and specialty contractors into one community where all contractor members are treated with equal respect and value, which will allow the new association to reach it's goal of "building the best contractor community in the world."
  • An active Foundation that awards scholarships, provides recruitment opportunities for member firms, builds relationships with educators in the Construction Science departments, representation on Region V's Advisory Board. Continues to enhance the learning opportunity for students in area universities.
  • Financial and industry support of the Construction Education Foundation, which is the construction industry's trades training center.
  • As an equal partner, specialty contractors will fully participate in setting policy, voting, major industry decisions and setting direction.
  • Relationship building
The exclusive opportunity, (not available to Subscriber Members) to network and build relationships with 150 Contractor Members through Professional Development Classes, Forums, Management and Safety Training, Golf and Bass Tournaments, Social Events, etc.
Strong relationships win all ties, some closes and ease difficult situations.
    Fairness
  • An opportunity to pay fair share for services and representation that benefits all in the industry.

Q: What can happen when Contractor Membership increases and there is a surplus of dues?
A: Board decision to expand services and/or reduce dues, or both.

Membership Types

There are three primary types of membership in this Chapter: Contractor, Subscriber and Industry Members. Contractor Members are General Contractors and Specialty Contractors who provide labor, meet the requirements stated in “membership qualification” above and who pay volume dues.
Subscriber Members are Specialty Contractor firms who do not choose the Contractor Category and are only interested in the weekly CMD Bulletin and QUOIN's publications, cellular phone plan, workers compensation program and group insurance. By virtue of this election, a Subscriber Member may not vote, hold office in the Association, and may at times be called upon to pay additional sums for services rendered.
Industry members
are service professionals and suppliers (i.e. Insurance Agencies, Attorneys, etc.) who continue to have networking and training opportunities, who are not eligible for Contractor membership.
Other types of membership
include Visiting Member status, Honorary Member status, and Life Member status. Each of these categories are outlined in the Chapter’s By-Laws.
